A brief history

Portobello Press was formed in 1983 by co-owners Peter Murtagh and Robert Howie. Peter was the Sales and Managing Director and Robert was the Finance and Operations Director. Both had extensive experience in the printing industry and felt that this experience and the lessons learned working for other people would enable them to successfully run their own business.

The business initially operated out of shop premises in Portobello Road, London W10 (hence the name) and offered copying and Print Management services. Within 2 years, the business had grown to such an extent that we outgrew the shop premises and moved to larger industrial premises 2 miles away, which enabled us to install our first printing presses and expand the business further.

In 1991, we moved to our current premises of just under 15,000 square feet and installed our first large format multi-colour press. Since then the Company has grown steadily over the years, always updating and utilising the latest technology. This has resulted in turnover in excess of £3.5 million for the last 2 years.

However, we are confident that the main reason for our continued success is that we never deviated from our initial aims in 1983, i.e. to offer a quality end product with the best customer service we can provide, at a reasonable price. The fact that most of our major accounts have been with us for many years is testament to the success of this basic principle.

Just as important to us was employing the right staff and looking after them well to keep them and so ensure that we could provide a high quality service to our clients which remained consistent.

In 2007, Peter and Robert sold the majority of their shares, although Peter remained as Managing Director, but in 2009, they bought back the shares as they felt this would be in the best interests of staff and customers alike, by ensuring that the basic principles on which the company was founded continue.

Stationery

With the advent of electronic commerce as a convenient method of instant business-to-business communication, the presence of a quality printed letterhead still evokes in the recipient that personal and professional touch.

Since its inception in 1983, Portobello Press has been serving the printed office stationery needs of commercial enterprises and institutions throughout the country.

Today, we print for many household names and large corporations, many of whom we have retained for over twenty years. That doesn’t mean to say we don’t deal with the little man too. Portobello Press is committed to complying with all relevant legislation and where possible to exceed industry best practice. We are responsible for identifying, assessing, controlling and monitoring our environmental aspects and their potential impact upon the environment. We are committed to a process of continual improvement in our environmental performance and Portobello Press has implemented a management programme with published environmental targets and objectives.

We have produced an electronic environmental management system following the requirements of ISO 14001:2004 and hope to achieve accreditation under the standard early in 2010.

The policy is reviewed regularly by the Environmental Management Team and is available to all stakeholders via the website.

Portobello Press has recently gained accreditation to the FSC and PEFC standards.
